Why Does My Car Make a Grinding Noise When Turning?


You turn the steering wheel, ease into a parking spot, and suddenly hear it: grrrr… crunch… grind. Not exactly the soundtrack you want from your car.

A grinding noise when turning can be anything from a relatively simple issue, such as worn brake components, to a more serious problem involving the steering or suspension system. The tricky part is that different problems can produce surprisingly similar sounds.

So, what does that grinding noise actually mean? And how do you know whether your car needs a quick repair—or whether it has reached the point where keeping it on the road no longer makes financial sense?

Let’s break it down.

First, Pay Attention to When the Grinding Happens

Before assuming the worst, notice when the noise occurs. Does it happen only when turning left? Only at low speeds? When you turn the steering wheel all the way? Or does it continue even when driving straight?

These details can help narrow down the source.

  • Grinding while turning at low speeds: Could point toward a steering, suspension, CV joint, or wheel-related problem.
  • Grinding when the wheel is turned sharply: May indicate a worn CV joint or an issue with the power steering system.

  • Grinding that happens while braking and turning: Brake components may be involved.
  • Grinding that continues while driving straight: The issue may involve a wheel bearing, brakes, tires, or another rotating component.

The noise itself is useful information. Your car is basically trying to tell you something—albeit in the least pleasant language possible.

1. A Worn CV Joint Could Be the Culprit

The CV joint allows power from the engine and transmission to reach the wheels while allowing the suspension and steering to move.

When a CV joint begins wearing out, it can make clicking, popping, or grinding sounds, particularly while turning. A damaged CV boot can also allow grease to escape and dirt or moisture to enter, accelerating wear.

One common clue is that the noise becomes more noticeable when turning sharply while accelerating.

If ignored for too long, a severely damaged CV joint can eventually affect the vehicle's ability to transfer power to the wheel.

2. Your Wheel Bearings May Be Wearing Out

Wheel bearings allow the wheels to rotate smoothly. When they begin to fail, they can produce humming, rumbling, growling, or grinding noises.

The sound may become more noticeable when you steer because turning changes the load placed on the wheel bearing.

A bad wheel bearing isn't something you want to casually ignore. Besides making an awful noise, excessive bearing wear can affect wheel movement and vehicle handling.

4. Suspension Parts Could Be Worn

Your suspension system contains several components that help keep the vehicle stable and allow the wheels to move properly.

As a car ages, components such as:

  • Ball joints
  • Control arm bushings
  • Tie rods
  • Strut mounts
  • Stabilizer links

can wear out.

Not every suspension problem produces a classic grinding sound. Some cause clunks, creaks, squeaks, or knocking noises instead. But if you hear an unusual sound while steering, particularly on uneven roads or during low-speed turns, suspension components deserve attention.

Worn suspension parts can also affect tire wear and steering response.

5. Power Steering Problems Can Cause Noise

If your car uses hydraulic power steering, a low power-steering fluid level or a problem with the steering system can cause whining, groaning, or grinding-like noises when turning the wheel.

You might notice the sound is particularly obvious when turning the steering wheel near its full range.

Check your vehicle's owner's manual before adding any fluid. Different vehicles use different fluids, and some newer cars use electric power steering instead of hydraulic systems.

If the steering suddenly feels heavy or difficult to control, treat that as more than just an annoying noise. Get the vehicle inspected.

6. Something Could Be Rubbing Against the Wheel

Sometimes the problem is surprisingly simple.

A damaged inner fender liner, loose plastic panel, bent component, or debris can rub against the tire or wheel when the steering wheel is turned.

This type of problem may produce a scraping or grinding sound that appears only during certain steering angles.

If you've recently hit a pothole, driven over debris, or had work performed around the wheel area, it's worth checking for anything visibly loose or out of position.

7. Low-Quality or Damaged Tires Can Also Contribute

Tires don't normally create a grinding noise, but damaged tires, unusual tread wear, incorrect pressure, or tire rubbing can create strange sounds during turns.

Pay attention to whether the tire is contacting the wheel well or another component.

Uneven tire wear can also be a clue that something else—such as an alignment or suspension issue—isn't quite right.

Is It Safe to Keep Driving?

That depends on what's causing the noise.

However, you shouldn't diagnose a grinding noise based solely on how loud it is. Some serious mechanical problems start as relatively subtle noises.

  • Reduced braking performance

Here's where the conversation gets a little more practical.

A grinding noise doesn't automatically mean your car is finished. Sometimes the repair is straightforward. Replacing a worn component can make perfect sense if the vehicle is otherwise reliable and in good condition.

But what if the grinding noise is just one item on a very long repair list?

Imagine an older vehicle that needs suspension work, tires, brakes, a battery, and other repairs—all while continuing to lose value. At some point, spending another few thousand dollars to keep an aging car running may not make financial sense.
